Located in Suite 39 of the newly built Sunnybank Private Hospital Specialists Centre.  Dr Mar Fan continues to provide residents of Sunnybank and surrounding Southside suburbs with expert care in colon & rectal as well as general surgery. Dr Mar Fan is a certified Colonoscopist (GESA colonoscopy recertification) and has special interest in therapeutic colonoscopy.  The surgery also provides one stop PR bleeding management, anorectal ultrasonography and manometry as well as capsule endoscopy.  Dr Mar Fan also provide expert medico legal opinions via direct referral or thru Medilaw, MLCOA, Integrity Medico Legal or Red Health in Brisbane.  Call or email us today for appointment or enquiries.

About Dr Michael J Mar Fan

Dr Michael Mar Fan was born in Hong Kong and came to Australia at the age of 11, schooled at St Joseph's College Nudgee, St Leo's College and University of Queensland.  He graduated from University of Queensland Medical School in 1989 and completed his advanced training in General Surgery at the Royal Brisbane Hospital in 1996. Post fellowship trainings were obtained in the subspecialty of colon & rectal surgery, laparoscopic colon surgery and colonoscopy from 1997-2000 at National University Hospital, Singapore, Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, St Mark's Hospital, Northwick Park, London & Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline and  Edinburgh. Dr Mar Fan was a RSO at the famed St Mark’s Hospital, Northwick Park, London in 1999. It was in the UK where Dr Mar Fan had the privilege  of working closely with the giants of colorectal surgery and colonoscopy at that time, including Mr Hamish Thomson (Gloucester), Profs John Nicholls, Robin Phillips, John Northover, Clive Bartram, James Thomson, Peter Mann and Christopher Williams.

He is a registered Medical Practitioner and Specialist in General Surgery in the State of Queensland under the auspices of Australian Health Practitioners and Regulation Agencies.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and Royal Colleges of Surgeons England, Edinburgh & Ireland and International College of Surgeons.  Elected by his peers, he  holds the fellowships of the prestigious Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia & New Zealand, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland and International Society of University Colon & Rectal Surgeons.
He is a member of Gastroenterology Society of Australia, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, European Society of Coloproctology, General Surgeons Australia, American, ANZ, European & British hernia societies.

He is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and recently graduated from the Harvard Medical / Business School Surgeon Leadership Program (eMBA) for 2018-2019. 

He is currently a Senior Visiting Medical Officer at Sunnybank Private Hospital since 2000 and Canossa Day Surgery since 2007.  He was the Director of General Surgery at the QEII Jubilee Hospital from 2000 to 2005 and thereafter a Senior Visiting Medical Officer from 2005 to 2013.  He is the current chairman of the Sunnybank Private Hospital Medical Advisory Committee (since 2020). He just recently been appointed as a member of Panel of Clinical Experts in General & Colorectal Surgery. Technology Assessment and Access Division / Health Financing Group, Office of Health Technology Assessment. Australian Government Department of Health (Appointed 07/02/2020).

His scope of clinical practice includes all facets of colon & rectal surgery and general surgery.  A major part of his clinical load includes diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy & colonoscopy.  In June 2018 he was a visiting ASGE international pairing program fellow to Keio University Hospital and National Cancer Center Hospital Tokyo working alongside ESD experts Prof Naohisa Yahagi and Yutaka Saito.

His medico legal experience comprised of medico legal reporting in both public and private sectors as well as ad hoc commissioned work for various legal firms and Avant Medical Protection. He is happy to prepare both plaintiff and defendant expert medical reports.  He is a member of the Medical Assessment Tribunal (General Surgery, Vascular & Urology), Office of Industrial Relations and Queensland Treasury since 2010 and is on the Workcover Panel of Independent Medical Examiners in general surgery. He is trained in both the AMA IV & V guides of permanent impairment rating and examination. He holds the Master Certified Independent Medical Examiners (MCIME) qualification from the American board of independent medical examiners (ABIME) and is a fellow of the American College of independent medical examiners. He is a member of the Medical Legal Society of Queensland and an associate of the Australasian College of Legal Medicine and have completed courses on basic and advanced law intensive, medical report writing and expert witness training with a moot court. He has completed the Medical Law in Qld Course, run by Barry.Nilsson Lawyers.

He hold the title of Harvard Global Scholar in Surgical Leadership from the famed Harvard Medical School.

During his free time he and his wife loves to travel while savoring each country's exquisite cuisine and playing Golf is their passion especially links courses.  He has successfully completed and passed with distinction in the world famous WSET wine courses levels I, II & III, as well as the French Wine Scholar Program by the Wine Scholar Guild. Dr Mar Fan speaks fluent Cantonese.

Rebecca

Rebecca has been the Practice Manager since the inception of this practice. Previously held a managerial position in few renowned international hotel chain for many years. She is fluent in English and Bahasa Malaysia.

Megan

Megan has been with with the practice for over 14 years.  She was previously working at a GP practice as a receptionist for 5 years before joining our team.

Veronica

Veronica has joined the practice since late January 2024. Originally from Macau and most recently worked for a medical practice in Christchurch, NZ.  She is fluent in English, Cantonese & Mandarin.

Kym

Kym is our medical typist that has been with the practice since the beginning of this practice. Prior to establishing her own practice, she was with Qld Health.

Whats' new...

25 June 2022: Rebecca, our practice manager, representing Team Australia excelled at the recent Porsche Golf Cup final at Mallorca, Spain. Played over two consecutive days at the picturesque Canyamel GC and Club de Golf Alcanada (designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr), Rebecca came second in C grade, competing against both men and women, helped Team Australia to come second (First time ever) and helped herself to a nearest to the pin prize on hole 14 at Canyamel GC. Three prizes in one night, not bad, congratulations !! Special mention to Dr Mar Fan who kindly act as an expert caddy for those 2 days.

07 February 2022:   Rebecca , our practice manager won the lady section of Porsche Golf Australia Challenge recently. 

The  event was held at a tough Royal Melbourne Golf Club,  East course famed for its narrow tight fairways and small sized green (still rated as No 7 course in Australia, last year). 

Rebecca, a handy player from The Brisbane Golf Club amassed 33 stableford points and will now represent Porsche Team Australia in its World Cup final in Mallorca in June his year.. Good Luck to Rebecca and stay tuned
