Dr Michael Mar Fan was born in Hong Kong and came to Australia at the age of 11, schooled at St Joseph's College Nudgee, St Leo's College and University of Queensland. He graduated from University of Queensland Medical School in 1989 and completed his advanced training in General Surgery at the Royal Brisbane Hospital in 1996. Post fellowship trainings were obtained in the subspecialty of colon & rectal surgery, laparoscopic colon surgery and colonoscopy from 1997-2000 at National University Hospital, Singapore, Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, St Mark's Hospital, Northwick Park, London & Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline and Edinburgh. Dr Mar Fan was a RSO at the famed St Mark’s Hospital, Northwick Park, London in 1999. It was in the UK where Dr Mar Fan had the privilege of working closely with the giants of colorectal surgery and colonoscopy at that time, including Mr Hamish Thomson (Gloucester), Profs John Nicholls, Robin Phillips, John Northover, Clive Bartram, James Thomson, Peter Mann and Christopher Williams.
He is a registered Medical Practitioner and Specialist in General Surgery in the State of Queensland under the auspices of Australian Health Practitioners and Regulation Agencies. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and Royal Colleges of Surgeons England, Edinburgh & Ireland and International College of Surgeons. Elected by his peers, he holds the fellowships of the prestigious Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia & New Zealand, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland and International Society of University Colon & Rectal Surgeons.
